He becomes the fearsome Green Goblin, combining destructive technology with sadism to terrorise Peter Parker.

One of the very few enemies who knows Peter Parker’s secret identity. He goes straight for the people closest to him: in the comics, he kills Gwen Stacy; in the films, he causes the death of Aunt May. He’s a personal enemy, as much moral as physical. See also Norman, the man behind the mask.

Willem Dafoe plays Norman in the Sam Raimi trilogy (2002, a cult performance) and again in No Way Home (2021), redefining what fans expect from an MCU villain.

Venom

The black symbiote first finds Peter Parker during The Alien Costume Saga of 1984. Rejected by Peter, the symbiote bonds with journalist Eddie Brock, disgraced and consumed by hatred towards Spider-Man. Together they form Venom — the creature that combines Brock's hatred with the symbiote's powers.

Eddie Brock and Peter Parker are two sides of the same tragedy — morally they resemble each other far more than they would ever admit. The symbiote creates a dark, legendary relationship. Later on, Eddie evolves into Anti-Venom as a redeemer.

Topher Grace in Spider-Man 3 (2007), then Tom Hardy in Sony's Venom trilogy (2018-2024). Brief multiverse appearance in No Way Home.

Doctor Octopus

A brilliant nuclear physicist, Otto Octavius designs four mechanical arms to handle radioactive material from a safe distance. A laboratory accident fuses them permanently to his nervous system. Pain and power corrupt him into one of the most fearsome criminals in New York.

The only enemy who genuinely stole Peter Parker's life — during Superior Spider-Man, Otto swaps their minds and lives as Peter for 2 years. He also leads Ends of the Earth.

Alfred Molina plays Doc Ock in Spider-Man 2 (2004) by Sam Raimi — widely considered the best Spider-Man film ever made. He returns in No Way Home (2021).

Carnage

A sadistic serial killer locked up in the same cell as Eddie Brock, Cletus Kasady becomes the host of the Venom symbiote's offspring. The result: Carnage, a fusion of psychopath and symbiote — a creature of pure, unpredictable violence, even more powerful than Venom.

Where Venom keeps a residual morality thanks to Brock, Carnage is pure chaos — no code, no remorse, just the sadistic joy of killing. The central antagonist of Maximum Carnage, one of the most violent crossovers ever published. His accomplice Shriek shares his madness.

Woody Harrelson plays Carnage in Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021). A performance praised by fans, even though the film was seen as too light for how dark the character really is.

The Lizard

Dr Curt Connors, a one-armed biologist, tries to regrow his missing arm by synthesising a serum based on reptile DNA. The experiment turns him into a giant reptilian creature unable to control his primal rage. His wife and his son pay the price of his scientific ambition.

Connors is one of the very few villains Peter wants to save more than fight. He is a scientist friend of Peter's father, a mentor, a good man transformed by his own science. The Lizard's tragedy is that of a man who wants to be whole again and loses himself in monstrosity.

Rhys Ifans plays the Lizard in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) alongside Andrew Garfield. He returns in No Way Home (2021) through the multiverse.

Mysterio

Smoke-filled dome helmet, holograms, hallucinogenic gases, faked levitation — Mysterio creates the perfect illusion of having cosmic powers when he is really nothing more than a genius of staging.

Mysterio embodies manipulation through information. He turned Spider-Man into a villain in the eyes of the whole world in Far From Home, publicly revealing his real identity.

Jake Gyllenhaal delivers an acclaimed performance in Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019). His illusion sequence is still one of the most visually stunning in the MCU.
