The short answer

This story tells how an army of alien creatures pours down on Earth after an involuntary mental signal, forcing the web-slinger to make a pact with his worst organic enemy. The resolution comes through an emotional shockwave that frees the contaminated minds. We go back over every stage in detail below.

Published in 1995 as part of the series Spider-Man: The Planet of the Symbiotes, this five-part saga marks a crucial milestone in the Marvel symbiote universe. Through a dark, oppressive and resolutely cosmic story, it deepens the mythology of creatures such as Venom and Carnage, while pitting Spider-Man against a threat on a planetary scale. The subject is covered in more detail in Phage: the bladed symbiote that its own writers misnamed.

It all begins with a moment of self-doubt: Eddie Brock wonders whether the Venom symbiote is influencing him to the point of wiping out his own will. To get answers, he decides to separate from the symbiote for a while. But that psychic break sets off a telepathic call... one picked up by the entire symbiote race across the far reaches of the universe.

A few days later, a shower of organic pods crashes down on Earth. Thousands of symbiotes climb out of them, hunting for human hosts to latch onto. The situation deteriorates fast: cities are overrun, civilians possessed. This is the start of a global cataclysm.

Thrown into this silent war, Spider-Man has no choice but to team up with Venom, his old enemy. Together, they have to push back an army of symbiotes determined to colonise the planet. A fragile, tense alliance… but a necessary one.

A worldwide invasion: Earth brought to its knees

As the symbiotes fall from the sky, an apocalyptic mood sets in fast. The authorities are overwhelmed, and the superheroes struggle to contain a threat on an unprecedented scale. The creatures take possession of innocent people, forming a silent army of parasites driven by a single collective instinct: to conquer.

For his part, Spider-Man is forced to walk a line between trust and suspicion. Because in this crisis, his main ally is also one of his worst nightmares: Venom. Eddie Brock, disorientated himself, tries to work out the origin of the chaos he unwittingly set off. Their unlikely pairing takes them to every corner of the country, through a series of visceral clashes against hordes of enraged symbiotes.

The tension ratchets up a notch when Carnage turns up. More violent and more unpredictable than ever, he acts as a loose cannon. Unlike the others, he is not looking to conquer, but to annihilate. His fusional bond with his symbiote makes him more powerful than ever. Against him, even Venom looks out of his depth.

In this part of the story, it becomes clear that the threat is not just a straightforward alien invasion. It is a war of wills: humans against the psychic influence of the symbiotes. The fight becomes as mental as it is physical, and Peter Parker starts to feel the pull of the darkness himself.

Breaking point: Eddie Brock and the cry from the heart

Faced with this sprawling threat, Spider-Man starts to falter. The invasion looks unstoppable, the planet overwhelmed. But it is Eddie Brock who becomes, against all odds, the key to this conflict. Drawing on his own pain, he realises that the symbiotes absorb more than flesh: they pick up on human emotions. Their weakness is not physical… it is emotional.

In a moment of rare power, Eddie sacrifices himself for a time, allowing himself to be swamped by every symbiote in order to trigger a psychic detonation on a planetary scale. That mental shockwave frees the infected minds and weakens the symbiote collective. It is a scene that is both tragic and heroic, and one where Venom truly becomes an anti-hero.

Spider-Man takes advantage of that moment of weakness to turn things around. Through an unprecedented blend of strategy and compassion, he frees the last of the victims and sends the creatures back through a dimensional rift opened by the scientists at Stark Industries.

This climax is deeply emotional and symbolic. It shows that sometimes strength lies not in the blows you land, but in the wounds you own. Peter Parker and Eddie Brock, opposed for so long, find a kind of shared redemption by fighting side by side to save humanity… and themselves.

Legacy and fallout: the seeds of symbiote chaos

By the end of Planet of the Symbiotes, Earth is saved… but the scars run deep. The link between Peter Parker and the symbiotes is left unresolved, marked by a visceral mistrust. As for Venom, he is no longer quite an enemy. This series sets in motion a major shift in the dynamic between Spider-Man and his most formidable organic rival.

The fallout from this arc is felt in many later stories: the emergence of Carnage, the rise of alternative symbiotes such as Riot and Phage, and the development of anti-symbiotes and new suits for Peter.

On the editorial side, Planet of the Symbiotes above all made it possible to lay the foundations of a symbiote universe with far more depth, one that would explode years later with arcs like Maximum Carnage or Back in Black.
