For a long time he operated in the shadows as a brutal assassin, hunting Peter's enemies... and also certain heroes he judged too weak to survive.

From the shadows to redemption: the Spider-Man of Houston
The major turning point in Kaine's story comes after the events of Spider-Island. Having sacrificed himself in that crisis, he comes out transformed, cured of his deformities and, above all... at peace. He decides to turn his back on his violent instincts and take on a new role: that of a hero.
It is in the series Scarlet Spider (2012) that we meet a new Kaine, settled in Houston, Texas. Far from New York and the suffocating legacy of Peter Parker, Kaine tries to become a different Spider-Man: more brutal, more cynical, but driven by a genuine will to see justice done. He saves innocents, takes on new enemies such as the Houston Werewolf or the Arachnid, and builds up a cast of supporting characters all his own, such as Aracely, a teenage girl with psychic powers.
This Kaine does not mess about with threats. He will kill if he has to, but he is also capable of empathy, sacrifice and remorse. Watching him fight to hold back his inner demons gives his journey a strikingly human dimension.

Kaine in the Spider-Verse: a crucial part to play
When the multiverse is threatened by the Inheritors, those vampiric entities that hunt the bearers of the 'Spider-Totem', Kaine becomes a central player in the Spider-Verse arc. His totemic link is unusually strong, which draws the attention of Morlun and his family, who see Kaine as one of the pillars to remove if they want to weaken the spider network.
In this epic crossover, Kaine sacrifices himself once again so the other Spider-Men can survive. He briefly transforms into a monstrous version nicknamed “The Other”, a primal and fearsome arachnid entity, before being killed in one final confrontation. That heroic act seals his redemption arc for good: Kaine, the broken clone, dies a hero.
Happily, as so often in comics, death is never final. Kaine turns up again later in the series Clone Conspiracy, then in Spider-Geddon, still haunted by his past but ready to carry on the fight.
