What is a symbiote?
A symbiote is an amorphous alien life form originally from Klyntar, an entire planet shaped by these creatures. With no stable body of its own, a symbiote needs a host to bond with in order to survive and act. That union is never neutral: it is both symbiosis, where the host gains prodigious abilities, and parasitism, because the symbiote gradually influences the emotions, the aggression and the will of whoever it inhabits. Symbiotes form one of the most striking families among Spider-Man's villains, alongside other lineages every bit as formidable.
Once bonded, the symbiote amplifies the powers of its host: superhuman strength, regeneration, heightened agility, organic tendrils and blades, perfect mimicry and the ability to imitate any clothing. It even neutralises Spider-Man's spider-sense, which makes it a fearsomely hard opponent to anticipate. But that power comes at a price. Symbiotes have two major, well-known weaknesses: sound, especially high frequencies and sonic vibrations, and fire, which can weaken or kill the creature. Those vulnerabilities have become central to many iconic confrontations.
At the origin of the entire species stands Knull, the creator god of the symbiotes, a primordial deity born of darkness before light itself existed. The link with Spider-Man goes back to Secret Wars: that is where Peter Parker discovers a mysterious living black suit. Seduced by the powers it grants him, he adopts it before understanding the creature's parasitic nature and tearing himself away from it. Rejected, the symbiote finds a new host in Eddie Brock and becomes Venom — giving birth to one of the greatest enemies, and sometimes allies, of the web-slinger.
The symbiote family
The symbiote dynasty follows a genuine family tree. It all starts with Knull, the creator god, whose living darkness gives rise to the species. From that lineage comes Venom, the original symbiote bonded to Eddie Brock, who in turn spawns his offspring Carnage (Cletus Kasady); and from Carnage descends Toxin, reputed to be more powerful than either of his elders. Around this direct bloodline orbit figures such as Anti-Venom, the white, purifying version of the symbiote, and Shriek, Carnage's human ally. Understanding this hierarchy — creator, original, spawn — is the key to navigating everything else in this hub.

How many symbiotes are there in the Spider-Man universe?
There are more than fifteen named, recurring symbiotes in Marvel comics, from the most famous — Venom, Carnage and Toxin — to the Life Foundation members (Scream, Riot, Phage, Agony, Lasher). Because symbiotes reproduce by spawning offspring, their total number is technically unlimited, especially since the introduction of Knull and his original army.
What is the difference between a symbiote and Venom?
'Symbiote' refers to the whole alien species from Klyntar, whereas Venom is one specific symbiote: the very first to bond lastingly with a human host, Eddie Brock. In other words, Venom is to the symbiote species what an individual is to a family. Every Venom is a symbiote, but not every symbiote is Venom: Carnage, Toxin, Scream and Anti-Venom are other members of the same lineage, each with its own colour, host and temperament.
