The short answer

The scarlet symbiote is born from a fragment torn away from Venom during a prison escape. Where its predecessor sets itself limits, this one shapes blades out of its own body, regenerates and strikes for the sheer pleasure of it. Its timeline, from Ravencroft to its cosmic drift, is set out below.

Among all the enemies of Spider-Man, few inspire as much fear as Carnage. Behind this bloodthirsty symbiote hides an even more terrifying character: Cletus Kasady, a remorseless serial killer whose fusion with the symbiote gave birth to one of the most unstable and murderous adversaries in the Marvel universe.

Who is Cletus Kasady?

Cletus Kasady is a psychopath born into a violent family. Committed very young for mental illness, he carries out his first murders long before he ever meets the symbiote. It is while sharing a cell with Eddie Brock (aka Venom) that Kasady's fate tips over.

During an escape, a fraction of the Venom symbiote bonds with him, creating Carnage: an entity far more dangerous than Venom itself, because it is amplified by Kasady's madness.

A psychopath before the symbiote

Committed very young, Kasady kills long before he meets the symbiote. During an escape, a fraction of the Venom symbiote bonds with him and creates Carnage.

Why is Carnage so dangerous?

Unlike Venom, who follows a certain moral code, Carnage is driven by a pure desire for chaos and destruction. He is not trying to dominate or take revenge, but to kill for pleasure. That makes him unpredictable and almost impossible to reason with.

His powers, similar to those of Spider-Man and Venom, are boosted by his ability to create weapons out of his own body, to regenerate quickly and to survive in extreme conditions.

Pure chaos

Carnage kills for pleasure, with no wish to dominate or take revenge.

Unpredictable

With no moral code, he is almost impossible to reason with.

Enhanced powers

Weapons drawn from his own body, rapid regeneration and survival in extreme conditions.

A threat to Spider-Man and beyond

Spider-Man has had to team up with Venom to face Carnage on several occasions. The red symbiote is a danger not only to Peter Parker, but to the whole city, and even to the Marvel universe when he becomes Dark Carnage or bonds with cosmic entities.

A threat beyond Peter

Spider-Man has had to team up with Venom several times: Carnage threatens the whole city, and even the Marvel universe when he becomes Dark Carnage.

In some comics versions, Carnage even develops a particular relationship with Shriek , an ally as unstable as she is formidable. Their toxic dynamic takes on an even more disturbing dimension when it plays out within the Ravencroft Institute , the place where the madness of Spider-Man's worst enemies is supposed to be contained, but where it often only grows. It is under the watchful eye of Ashley Kafka that this relationship becomes the symbol of a completely uncontrollable threat in the Spider-Man universe.

Carnage's alternative versions and evolutions

Over the years, Carnage has been through several versions that made him even more dangerous. In the ‘Maximum Carnage’ arc, he teams up with other criminals to spread terror across New York, forcing Spider-Man to work alongside Venom, Morbius and other heroes to stop him.

In ‘Absolute Carnage’ (2019), Cletus returns as Dark Carnage, merged with the Grendel symbiote, an entity older and more powerful still. He then becomes a cosmic threat, seeking to awaken Knull, the god of the symbiotes. That major arc marked a turning point in the character's history, taking him from psychopathic killer to catalyst of the apocalypse.

Carnage also turns up in many alternative realities, such as the Ultimate universe or What If...?, where his influence sometimes becomes global, even planetary.

Appearances in film and video games

Carnage appears in several iconic video games, including Spider-Man & Venom: Maximum Carnage (Super Nintendo), Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions or more recently in certain DLC. His design and his attacks make him a boss players dread.

On screen, he was played by Woody Harrelson in Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021), introducing the character into the Sony Spider-Man Universe. Despite a sometimes controversial interpretation, that version helped popularise the character with a much wider audience.

Fans now hope to see him come back in darker versions, or folded into the official Marvel multiverse.

Carnage, the ultimate reflection of symbiote chaos

What makes Carnage even more frightening is that he embodies the most uncontrollable version of the very concept of a symbiote. Where Venom can sometimes show moral ambiguity, Carnage stands for pure evil. He seeks neither justice, nor balance, nor revenge: he simply wants to watch the world burn.

In some recent stories, the character gains even more complexity, notably with the introduction of Toxin, Carnage's 'son', who represents a new generation of symbiotes. That creates a twisted dynamic between biological kinship and genetic curse.

More broadly, Carnage is often used as a narrative catalyst: every time he appears, it is to push Spider-Man (and his allies) to their very limits. His return is rarely trivial, and always heralds a major dramatic arc in the Marvel comics.

A symbiote born of chaos and pure hatred. The perfect fusion of a sadistic murderer and a destructive alien entity. A recurring enemy of both Spider-Man and Venom. Able to threaten the Earth single-handedly when he evolves into Dark Carnage.

With Carnage, Marvel gave birth to an enemy who pushes the limits of chaos, and who keeps fascinating Spider-Man fans across the comics, the films and the merchandise.
