The short answer
His danger doesn’t come from brute force: mastery of aerial combat, tactical composure and a sharp grasp of the web-slinger’s weaknesses make him a lasting threat. The version played by Michael Keaton in 2017 adds a very concrete social anger on top. We break the character down below.

The origins of Vulture in the Spider-Man comics
Among Spider-Man’s many enemies, Vulture is one of the oldest and most iconic. Introduced as early as The Amazing Spider-Man #2 in 1963, the character was dreamed up by the legendary duo Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Going by the name Adrian Toomes, Vulture is a brilliant engineer specialising in electromagnetism. Embittered by his business partner’s betrayal, he turns his own technology to revenge and becomes one of Peter Parker’s first supervillains.
His winged exosuit, modelled on birds of prey, lets him fly at high speed and call on superhuman strength. Although older than most of the web-slinger’s opponents, Vulture makes up for his age with a formidable tactical intelligence and plenty of experience in aerial combat.
Over time, several incarnations of Vulture appear in the comics, but Adrian Toomes remains the best known. He is a regular member of the Sinister Six, and a constant threat to Spider-Man, especially when he goes after the people closest to him.

Vulture on screen: a villain reinvented in the MCU
While Vulture long remained a second-tier villain in the comics, his move to the big screen changed everything. It was in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) that the character got his first live-action adaptation, played magnificently by Michael Keaton. A modernised version, more believable and rooted in the reality of the MCU.
Here Adrian Toomes is introduced as an honest businessman, salvaging debris from alien attacks, until Tony Stark (Iron Man) pulls the rug from under him. The result? He slides into crime and becomes an alien-weapons trafficker, while donning a high-tech flying-wing suit: a successful blend of realism and faithfulness to the comics.
What makes this Vulture so memorable:
🎭 A human, understandable antagonist
he acts to protect his family.
⚙️ Technology consistent with the MCU universe, salvaged from the Chitauri and recovered through Damage Control.
🧠 A strategic intelligence
he works out Peter Parker’s identity and plays on his psychological weaknesses.
🌐 A place in a potential multiverse
his brief appearance in Morbius hints at connections between the SSU (Sony) and the MCU.

What Vulture stands for: resentment, the working class and the anti-hero
The Vulture is not just a criminal with wings. He embodies several powerful themes that make him so distinctive in Spider-Man’s gallery of villains. Starting with the fact that he is often the mirror image of Peter Parker: where Peter embodies youth, hope and responsibility, Toomes embodies age, disillusionment and social anger.
He is one of the few villains to belong to the American working class. A rejected entrepreneur, a working man turned outlaw, he takes on the great figures of power such as Tony Stark and institutions such as Damage Control. This social dimension gives him a complexity rarely explored among the web-slinger’s enemies.
The big themes Vulture embodies:
📉 Social injustice
a victim of the system, he tips into illegality to survive.
🧓 Generational clash
an ‘old man’ who refuses to be left behind by the new generation of heroes.
🎭 A double family life
in Homecoming, he is both a criminal and a caring father, adding an unprecedented dramatic tension.
🕷️ A dark mirror of Spider-Man
two faces of New York, two ways of facing adversity.
💡 This duality runs through many articles on the blog, not least our analysis of the relationship between Peter Parker and Tony Stark.
What future for Vulture in the Spider-Man multiverse?
The brief appearance of Vulture (Michael Keaton) in the post-credits scene of Morbius raised plenty of questions. How did he get from the MCU to the SSU (Sony's Spider-Man Universe)? That question is left deliberately vague, but it confirms one thing: the character has not said his last word.
Several theories point to a future key role for Toomes in the Sinister Six, the supervillain team that could finally reach the big screen in a 100% Sony production. And with the constant expansion of the Spider-Verse (animated and live-action films), Vulture could well turn up in another parallel universe… or even take on Miles Morales in a future saga!
What could happen next:
🎬 Official integration into the Sinister Six (with Kraven, Scorpion, Mysterio…). 🔁 A return to the MCU through a multiverse twist. 🧑🎓 A meeting with Miles Morales in a live-action or animated sequel. 📜 A mentor or secondary-villain role in an alternative origin story.
