The short answer

Tom Holland describes Spider-Man: Brand New Day as a direct sequel to No Way Home, not a reboot and not an Avengers crossover: the plot stays tight around Peter, at street level. He promises a more intimate story, marked by the hero’s isolation. We put his words under the microscope below.

Ever since the official announcement of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, all eyes have been on Tom Holland, the actor who defined the MCU’s Peter Parker. Between interviews, leaks and cryptic statements, he juggles teasing and strategic silence with real skill. What do we actually know about his involvement in Spider-Man 4? And above all: what does it tell us about how his character is evolving? To dig deeper into this subject, see also Sadie Sink in Spider-Man: Brand New Day: who is she really playing? The Jean Grey theory.

This first part of our breakdown goes back in detail over everything Tom Holland has said (and left unsaid) since the release of No Way Home, to get a clearer picture of what this hotly anticipated new chapter has in store for the web-slinger.

A well-earned break after No Way Home

Right after the release of No Way Home, Tom Holland said he wanted to take a break. He told GQ in 2022: “If I’m still playing Spider-Man after I turn 30, I’ll clearly have done something wrong.” The line cast doubt on his return, but it now looks firmly like a thing of the past.

In reality, that break turned out to be temporary — and strategic. Tom Holland used the time to shoot the series The Crowded Room and explore other roles, while staying in close contact with the producers at Marvel and Sony.

A return confirmed by several sources

In May 2024, the actor broke his silence while promoting Uncharted 2: “I’m really excited about the direction Spider-Man 4 is taking. We want to offer something completely different.” The statement was quickly backed up by Kevin Feige himself, who said filming was scheduled for summer 2025.

✅ Worth noting: in the same interview, Holland confirmed that the title Brand New Day was chosen as a direct nod to the comics, which reinforces the idea of a lonelier, more mature Peter Parker, rebuilding his life.

What he flatly denied

  • A complete reboot? Wrong. Holland confirmed that Spider-Man 4 really will be the direct sequel to No Way Home.
  • A team-up film with the Avengers? Denied. He specified that the film would be “centred on Peter, with very little interference from other superheroes”.
  • The actor stepping away? No. Holland has signed on for several projects, even if Spider-Man 4 is being treated as a “crucial standalone” project.

A darker Peter Parker: what Tom Holland has hinted at

Ever since his first MCU appearances, Tom Holland has played a young, enthusiastic Spider-Man, still guided by Tony Stark and shielded by the Avengers. But all of that now belongs to the past. In several recent interviews, Holland has let slip hints of a major change of tone in Spider-Man 4.

“Peter is alone. He has lost everything. And it’s in that isolation that he’ll have to redefine himself, as a man and as a hero.” – that’s how the actor summed up the character’s state of mind at a Comic-Con 2024 panel.

The themes Holland has raised:

  • 🕷️ A more “psychological” film that explores Peter’s invisible wounds.
  • 🖤 A possible flirtation with the dark side, notably through the symbiote left behind at the end of No Way Home.
  • 🏙️ A more “street-level” narrative, centred on New York, far from cosmic stakes.

According to several corroborated rumours, the film should show a Spider-Man seeking redemption, closer to what we saw in comics such as Back in Black or The Other. A logical development if you consider the dramatic ending of No Way Home.

A lone Spider-Man… but not one without enemies

Holland has also said he wants to see Spider-Man “face a more intimate, more human threat.” A comment that fuels the theories around the return of villains such as Scorpion (Mac Gargan, already teased in Homecoming) or Kingpin, already established in the world of Daredevil.

He also shared his admiration for actor Vincent D’Onofrio, who plays Wilson Fisk. Fans are hoping for a direct confrontation in Brand New Day, especially after Matt Murdock’s crossover introduction in the last film.

What Tom Holland has denied about Spider-Man 4

Fans feed on every rumour, but Tom Holland has also been keen to deny some persistent talk around the next instalment. Always careful in the way he communicates, the actor wanted to clear up several points doing the rounds in the specialist press and on social media.

❌ No immediate reunion of the three Spider-Men

Asked about a possible reunion of Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and himself in Spider-Man 4, Holland was categorical: “What we did in No Way Home is unique. You shouldn’t try to repeat it too often.

That doesn’t mean the other Spider-Men are shut out of the MCU forever, but they aren’t expected in this particular instalment. The aim is to refocus on Peter Parker at his most human and vulnerable.

❌ No Venom appearance… for now

While the post-credits scene of No Way Home teases a symbiote left behind in the MCU, Holland explained that “Venom won’t be the film’s main antagonist”. Peter may briefly come into contact with the black suit, but Tom Hardy’s Venom would not yet be integrated into this universe at this stage of the story.

❌ No Miles Morales… at least not yet

Asked repeatedly about a possible appearance by Miles Morales in live action, Holland admitted he “loves the character” but stated: “It’s not time yet. Peter still has a road to travel before he passes anything on.”

A cautious answer, one that doesn’t close the door completely… but it does confirm that Brand New Day will stay centred on Peter Parker.

Conclusion: a more mature, more intimate Spider-Man

What Tom Holland has confirmed and denied points to a very clear direction for Spider-Man: Brand New Day: this will be a more personal, darker film, where Peter Parker faces his inner demons as much as his external enemies. Gone are the Stark gadgets and the MCU safety net: Spider-Man becomes a lone, urban hero again, grounded in reality.

A fan keyring is the modern equivalent of the enamel pin. Small, discreet, but instantly recognised by the people who know.

  • ✅ A central place in the future of the MCU (Secret Wars, incursions…)
  • ✅ A more adult, more dramatic tone, inspired by the “Brand New Day” and “Back in Black” comics.

Fans who were waiting for a deeper narrative turn won’t be disappointed. And even if a few hopes, such as the return of Garfield and Maguire or the arrival of Miles Morales, will have to wait, everything suggests this new instalment will lay the groundwork for an even bigger future for the web-slinger.
