Spider-Man Brand New Day on VOD and Blu-ray: when and where to watch

‘When’s it out on streaming?’ It’s the most asked question the moment a film leaves the big screen, and most of the answers doing the rounds are guesswork.

In France, though, there’s a precise, binding and public rule. Here’s what it sets out, what it means in practice for this film, and why the platform it lands on is a separate question.

Why the date isn’t a free choice

It’s a French quirk, and it catches people out.

The media chronology

A film released in French cinemas can’t be exploited on other formats whenever the distributor fancies. An industry-wide agreement, given legal force by ministerial order, sets minimum delays for each type of release.

The system protects the cinema run and helps fund French production. It applies to every film released in cinemas in France, whatever the studio — American ones included.

The current windows

Since the agreement signed in February 2025, the scale runs as follows. Four months for DVD, Blu-ray and transactional VOD — that is, buying or renting the film on its own. Six months for Canal+. Nine months for Disney+, which secured that slot in return for commitments to invest in French production.

Then fifteen months for Netflix, seventeen months for the other subscription platforms such as Prime Video, and twenty-two months for free-to-air channels.

Doing the maths for this film

Brand New Day was released in French cinemas on 29 July 2026. Applying the scale:

Transactional VOD, DVD and Blu-ray become possible from late November 2026. Canal+ from late January 2027. A nine-month platform from late April 2027. And subscription streaming at fifteen or seventeen months takes us to autumn 2027 or early 2028.

These are earliest possible dates, not announced ones. A distributor can push a date back, never bring it forward.

Transactional VOD or subscription: the difference that matters

This is the most common mix-up, and it explains nearly every misunderstanding about dates.

Transactional VOD

You pay for one film, as a rental or an outright purchase, from an online shop. It’s the fastest route after the cinema — four months — and it’s the first window to open.

So it’s the only realistic way to watch the film at home before 2027.

Subscription

You pay a monthly fee and the film sits in a catalogue. This is what most people mean by ‘streaming’, and it’s by far the slowest route: between nine and seventeen months depending on the platform.

Waiting for subscription streaming on this film therefore means waiting until spring 2027 at the earliest, and probably longer.

Which platform

That’s the one thing the law doesn’t decide. The delay is set by regulation; the destination depends on the distributor’s commercial deals — deals that vary from country to country and from year to year.

Blu-ray, and what it still brings

Physical media has a reason to exist that has nothing to do with nostalgia.

The extras

It’s the only format that reliably carries the additional content — deleted scenes, commentaries, making-of features. Subscription platforms rarely offer them, and they pull them without warning.

On a film whose edit sparked debate, that material is often the most interesting part of the release.

Quality and permanence

A disc holds a higher picture and sound bitrate than a compressed stream delivers, and above all it doesn’t vanish from a catalogue overnight.

For a film you plan to rewatch several times, the sums work out differently from a rental.

The editions

A release on this scale usually comes with several versions: a standard edition, a 4K edition, and box sets. If you’re after a box set bundling several films, it generally arrives later than the standard edition.

Wait, or see it again in the cinema

It’s a real question on this one.

Four months waiting for VOD is short over the course of a year and long when you’re trying to dodge spoilers. And a film this big gets retold in full online within weeks of release.

What to watch first

If you’re planning to discover it at home, a bit of revision makes the experience noticeably better.

Four months is a long time by internet standards. A few habits limit the damage.

The danger peak

It isn’t release week, it’s the month that follows — when the analyses, the explainer videos and the reactions flood your recommendations. Then it dies down, before picking up again as the VOD window opens.

In other words, the riskiest stretch is also the one where you’re waiting hardest. That’s when discipline pays.

Thumbnails and headlines

Most spoilers people run into come from video thumbnails and article headlines, not the content itself. Muting recommendations on the subject works better than avoiding conversations.

The merchandise problem

Rarely anticipated: a figure or a costume can give away an appearance or a change of look all by itself. If you haven’t seen the film, browse the new arrivals carefully — that goes for the figures as much as the masks.

What the VOD window changes for the saga

Beyond the film itself, this milestone has knock-on effects.

The VOD opening brings a second wave of viewers — often as large as the first, and made up of people who never went to the cinema. That’s when the conversations restart, the theories resurface and the questions about what comes next become live again.

Rewatching the saga while you wait

Four months is exactly the time you need to go through the lot without rushing.

In what order

Two schools of thought: release order, which respects the way the films were conceived, and internal chronological order, which follows the character’s life. For a first full run-through, release order is still the clearest.

The essential films

The three previous instalments with the same lead form the direct foundation. The team-up appearances add context, without being strictly necessary to follow the latest film.

The animated versions

They tell a different story, with different characters, and have no bearing on the continuity of the live-action films. You can watch them at any point — and their quality makes them rarely a waste of time.

Why France is a special case

One point that explains a lot of frustration, especially when you compare with what you see from abroad.

The contrast with the United States

In the United States, there’s no legal obligation of this kind. A studio can put a film on VOD three weeks after the cinema if it decides to, and some have. The decision is purely commercial.

Hence the recurring gap: a film already available to buy across the Atlantic stays unavailable in France for months, with nothing the French distributor can do about it.

What the system funds

These delays aren’t arbitrary. They’re the trade-off in a system where broadcasters contribute to funding production, and where the cinema run is shielded from immediate competition.

You can find it restrictive as a viewer; it’s also what explains the density of the French cinema network, one of the best served in the world.

A framework that keeps changing

The scale has already been revised several times, and always in the direction of shorter waits. The transactional video-on-demand window in particular has come down from several months more to today’s four.

So the delays may well move again, but no change applies retroactively to a film already released.

The franchise’s other dates

While you’re noting dates down, you may as well have them all in mind.

The next animated instalment is expected in 2027, and the upcoming team-up films the character is due to appear in are spread over the same period. Those cinema release dates are announced by the studios and shift regularly — unlike the distribution windows, which follow mechanically.

The questions people ask

Can it come out earlier than planned?

No. The media chronology delays are legal minimums, not commercial targets. A distributor can release later, never earlier.

Will the film still be in cinemas when the VOD release arrives?

Rarely. A film this size holds screens for several weeks, then thins out well before the four months are up. There’s often a dead stretch of several weeks where the film is neither in cinemas nor available at home — and it’s that gap that makes the video release feel slow.

Will the exact date be announced?

Yes, usually a few weeks beforehand, by the distributor. What you can work out in advance is the earliest possible date; the real one is often placed on a commercially attractive week — in this case, the run-up to Christmas.

What if I buy it from abroad?

Windows differ from country to country, and a film can be available elsewhere before France. Watch out, though, for disc region coding and for the French audio track, which is rarely included on foreign editions.

Will it be on Disney+?

The nine-month window exists, but it only applies to films whose distributor has struck a deal with that platform. Nothing lets you state it for this film until an announcement is made.

How much does transactional VOD cost?

Prices vary by shop and by whether it’s a rental or an outright purchase. A rental is generally half the purchase price, for a limited viewing period once you press play.

Will there be an extended version?

Nothing points that way at this stage. Physical editions, on the other hand, almost always offer deleted scenes presented separately, which isn’t the same thing as a re-edit.

A calendar worth keeping

To sum up the milestones in order, counting from 29 July 2026.

Late November 2026 — buying and renting individually, DVD and Blu-ray. It’s the only milestone this year, and by far the most useful.

Late January 2027 — the window reserved for the long-standing film channel and its subscribers.

Late April 2027 — the nine-month window, subject to a deal existing with the platform concerned.

Autumn 2027 and early 2028 — the big subscription platforms, at fifteen then seventeen months.

Mid-2028 — free-to-air broadcast on the open channels.

Only one of these markers is close, and it’s the first. Everything else belongs to the following year — and that’s the point most people underestimate while they wait for ‘the streaming release’.

What to take away

Four months after 29 July: transactional VOD, DVD and Blu-ray open in late November 2026. That’s the only milestone anywhere near.

Note it down, and ignore the rest until then.

Everything else is a lot further off — six months for Canal+, nine months at best for a subscription platform, fifteen to seventeen months for the rest. And if you see a more optimistic streaming date doing the rounds, check which window it’s talking about: nine times out of ten, that’s where the confusion comes from.
