The short answer

No: the web-slinger thrived for more than fifty years without a shared universe, from the 1962 comics to the Raimi trilogy and then Marc Webb's two films, with his own gallery of allies and villains. He was only brought in back in 2015, and No Way Home returns him to solitude. We set out the full case below.

Ever since his surprise appearance in Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man has established himself as a central figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Carried by the freshness of Tom Holland, the web-slinger became a pillar of the MCU's Phase 3 in just a few years, stringing together appearances in Avengers: Infinity War, Endgame and his own solo trilogy.

But one question is on the lips of fans and analysts alike: Does Spider-Man really need the MCU to exist today? Or could he, as in his early days, shine solo, far from the Avengers and the cosmic stakes?

A hero outside the MCU for more than 50 years

Contrary to what many believe, the alliance between Spider-Man and the MCU is relatively recent. For decades, the character evolved entirely independently, across the films, the animated series and above all the comics. The sagas carried by Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield had no connection whatsoever with Iron Man, Hulk or SHIELD. And yet they marked an entire generation of fans.

The success of the first Spider-Man film in 2002 had nothing to do with a shared universe: it was the story of a young New Yorker trying to juggle responsibility, pain, love and duty. Nothing more.

A hit with no shared universe

The first Spider-Man film in 2002 marked a generation with no link to Iron Man, Hulk or SHIELD.

A late arrival in the MCU

It was only in 2015, thanks to a deal between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures, that Spider-Man was finally brought into the MCU. A long-awaited event, but one that already raised a worry: was the web-slinger about to become a mere ‘sidekick’ to Iron Man?

And sure enough, Tom Holland's Peter Parker started out very closely tied to Tony Stark, as we see in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Between the mentoring, the gifted gadgets and his involvement in Avengers business, the character seemed almost absorbed by the MCU, at the expense of his own narrative identity.

Arrival in 2015

A deal between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures brings Spider-Man into the MCU, with early outings closely tied to Tony Stark.

A dependence… but for how long?

The first instalments of the trilogy were a huge success, that much is undeniable. But with No Way Home, something changed. The ending of the film marks a brutal break: Peter Parker becomes invisible to the world, loses all his allies… and finally recovers a kind of old-school heroic solitude.

The writing choice is clear: Spider-Man is ready to exist on his own. No more Avengers, no more Stark gadgets, no more crossovers. We are back to the essence of the urban hero, alone against his enemies, his doubts and his city.

The break made by No Way Home

Peter Parker becomes invisible to the world, loses his allies and rediscovers a heroic solitude, with no Avengers and no Stark gadgets.

Spider-Man, a standalone legend before the MCU

Even before Marvel Studios coveted him to enrich their shared universe, Spider-Man already stood out for his narrative independence. Created in 1962 by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Peter Parker has always moved through a dense microcosm, populated with supporting allies, memorable enemies and personal dilemmas that have nothing to envy in the MCU's cosmic crises.

His most poignant stories, such as Kraven's Last Hunt, Back in Black or Spider-Man: Reign II, unfold without a single Avenger stepping in. And yet they have become pillars of the myth. Because Spider-Man never needed Thor or Doctor Strange to live through intimate tragedies, devastating losses or intense psychological battles.

A supporting cast that stands on its own

The web-slinger also has one of the richest supporting casts in the whole Marvel universe. From Aunt May to Mary Jane, by way of J. Jonah Jameson, Gwen Stacy, Flash Thompson and Harry Osborn… each of them embodies an emotional or moral facet of the hero.

And on the villain side, the list is even more impressive: the Green Goblin, Mysterio, Venom, the Vulture, and many more. So many powerful figures that let Spider-Man live through intense adventures without ever having to run into Captain America.

Solo box-office hits… long before Marvel Studios

The trilogy by Sam Raimi and the two films by Marc Webb proved that Spider-Man could be a smash hit at the cinema without the slightest link to the Avengers universe. The first Spider-Man , released in 2002, broke records, becoming a global phenomenon thanks to writing centred on the human, on doubt, and on how hard it is to shoulder responsibility.

That success was confirmed with Spider-Man 2, still regarded today as one of the best superhero films ever made. And even if the Amazing Spider-Man saga with Andrew Garfield had a more mixed fate, it remains a worthwhile attempt at a rawer, more emotional version of the character, once again… with no MCU.

👉 Spider-Man has therefore already proved, several times over and across several formats, that he could live, grow and triumph without being folded into a bigger structure. The question is not whether he is capable of it… but whether audiences are ready to follow him down that lonelier road again.

The limits of the MCU: dilution or extension of Spider-Man's identity?

While Spider-Man's arrival in the MCU gave the character fresh global exposure, it also drew a fair amount of criticism from long-standing fans. As early as Spider-Man: Homecoming, some accused Marvel Studios of turning Peter Parker into a mere ‘Avengers intern’, dependent on Stark tech and too far removed from his essence as a young hero struggling alone in New York.

That feeling grew stronger with Far From Home, where Peter literally inherits Tony Stark's glasses, becoming an ‘Iron Boy Jr.’ in his critics' eyes. The web-slinger then seemed to lose part of what made him unique: his resourcefulness, the decisions he took alone, his closeness to the street and to small human dramas.

A hero too caught up in cosmic stakes?

By joining intergalactic battles alongside the Guardians of the Galaxy and surviving Thanos's snap, Spider-Man moved up a level... but did he leave part of his soul behind? The web-slinger is, in essence, a neighbourhood hero. He faces bank robbers, mutant gangsters, mad scientists... not multiversal entities.

Some recent story arcs such as No Way Home have tried to balance that duality: deliver global spectacle while bringing Peter back to his dilemmas as a broke secondary school pupil, clumsy in love and misunderstood as a hero. And it worked. But the question remains: can he still exist without the MCU's super-gadgets?

A neighbourhood hero

The web-slinger by nature faces thieves and mad scientists, not multiversal entities; No Way Home tried to balance that duality.

A Phase 4 that invites a clean break

The ending of No Way Home is a turning point in that respect. Peter is now alone, with no friends, no Avengers, no Stark Tech. He wears a hand-stitched suit, lives in a small flat and fights in the shadows once more. This return to the very essence of the character could be the key to his rebirth outside the MCU.

The first details on Spider-Man 4: Brand New Day point the same way: a more ‘down-to-earth’ story, a darker mood, no other superheroes… all signs of a desire to refocus on the man behind the mask, Peter Parker, rather than on the plain ‘MCU Spider-Man’.

👉 And perhaps it is precisely in that stripping back, that laying bare, that Spider-Man will recover his full narrative power. By breaking away from the MCU, he reconnects with what he has always been: a tragic, courageous and deeply human hero.

Towards Brand New Day

Alone, in a hand-stitched suit, Peter fights in the shadows; Spider-Man 4: Brand New Day promises a more down-to-earth, darker story.

Conclusion: an inevitable break for a well-earned rebirth

Spider-Man has unquestionably benefited from joining the MCU. It let him reach a new audience, gain worldwide exposure and take his place in an epic fresco worthy of his myth. But that alliance has also, at times, watered down what made him strong: his solitude, his vulnerability, his roots in the real world.

Today, with the MCU itself seemingly searching for renewal, now is the perfect moment for Spider-Man to reclaim his independence. And everything suggests that is exactly what is coming with Spider-Man 4: Brand New Day.

Spider-Man without the MCU works if…

✅ The script focuses on personal, human, emotional stakes. ✅ The enemy embodies a psychological threat rather than a cosmic danger. ✅ Peter Parker becomes a young adult on his own again, with no technological crutches. ✅ The visual world refocuses on New York, its streets, its shadows, its dramas.

And that is the whole point: not to make a ‘budget Spider-Man’, but to reconnect with the very essence of the hero. The MCU was a stage, but not a destination. Spider-Man does not need a multiverse to move us. All he needs is a building, a web and a broken heart.
