Born in New York in 1922, Stanley Martin Lieber grew up in a modest Jewish family marked by the Great Depression. From his earliest years he dreamed of writing the 'great American novel'. Yet it was comics that would open the doors of his imagination. At just 17, he joined Timely Comics – later to become Marvel – as an assistant.
At the time, comics carried no prestige at all. So Stan chose the pen name Stan Lee to sign his first stories, saving his real name for what he hoped would one day be a more serious literary work. That pen name never left him… and became one of the most iconic in global pop culture.
He started out on humble tasks, but his writing talent soon shone through. In 1941 he wrote his first Captain America story, and little by little he established himself as lead writer. In the post-war years the comics industry went through a lean spell, but Stan Lee kept believing in the potential of superheroes, even as weariness crept in.
Then came the spark: on the advice of his wife Joan, he decided to write the story he wanted to read, even if it cost him his job. That choice gave birth to an unusual team of superheroes: the Fantastic Four. Then came Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, Daredevil, the X-Men and, of course... Spider-Man, arguably his greatest stroke of genius.
Stan Lee was never content to create powerful characters. He gave them flaws, doubts, a real life. Peter Parker, for instance, is a shy, rejected teenager juggling homework, insecurities and the loss of a beloved uncle. Stan Lee also invented the 'Marvel Method': instead of handing the artists a full script, he gave them a summary of the story, let them picture the pages visually, then wrote the dialogue afterwards. That freed artists such as Steve Ditko and Jack Kirby to innovate, and it strengthened the visual dimension of the storytelling.
