The short answer

Three big roles run through his career: freelance photographer at the Daily Bugle, then science teacher and laboratory researcher, and finally boss of Parker Industries. Each stage reflects a different phase of maturity, from struggling to make ends meet to full-blown industrial ambition. We break down every job below.

Peter Parker, a hero… but also a working man like any other

If Spider-Man fascinates millions of fans around the world, it is also because his alter ego, Peter Parker, is a deeply human hero. Behind the mask there is a young man who has to pay his rent, look after his Aunt May and juggle a working life with his super-hero responsibilities. What makes Peter so endearing is precisely that duality between ordinary everyday life and epic battles against the Green Goblin or Venom.

Over the decades, his adventures have shown us a whole host of different roles, each one a witness to his personal struggles and his growth. From his beginnings as a Daily Bugle photographer through to his post as CEO of Parker Industries, Peter Parker’s jobs reflect both the hardships of his youth and the maturity he eventually earned.

And that is exactly where the richness of the character lies: he evolves, he fails, he gets back up. His working life is every bit as dense as his personal story, which you can explore in our page dedicated to Peter Parker.

In this article we take you through every job he has held in the main comics, the films, the animated series and the video games. A fascinating dive into the web-slinger’s unlikely CV…

Daily Bugle photographer: the iconic job

  • A logical… and canny choice: Peter worked out very early on that he could make money from his Spider-Man activities by selling his own photos to the press. That is how he became a freelance photographer for the Daily Bugle, working under the fearsome J. Jonah Jameson.
  • An unstable, stressful job: despite his talent, Peter is often paid a pittance, criticised and even humiliated by his boss, who harbours an obsessive hatred of Spider-Man.
  • A double-edged job: the role keeps Peter close to everything the super-villains get up to, but it also forces him to lie constantly about where his shots come from.
  • Present in the adaptations: this role turns up in almost all of the Spider-Man films, notably Sam Raimi’s trilogy with Tobey Maguire, where the social and financial side of the job is brought out beautifully.

That job has become emblematic of the character. On its own it captures Peter Parker’s resourcefulness and the daily grind he lives with, torn between his civilian life and his heroic responsibilities. It is also what sets him apart from billionaire super-heroes like Iron Man or Batman.

Teacher, researcher, mentor: a more mature Parker

  • A natural progression: after years of juggling his studies and his battles, Peter becomes a teacher of physical sciences in several versions of the comics, notably in Ultimate Spider-Man or The Amazing Spider-Man.
  • A role about passing things on: this job lets him share what he knows, have a real impact on young people, and sometimes even cross paths with pupils who go on to become allies or threats.
  • Stability, but only up to a point: Peter is often a part-time teacher or works in precarious conditions, which reflects how hard it is to reconcile a normal civilian life with his super-hero duties.
  • A scientist of genius: in other story arcs he is taken on by laboratories or research centres, where he develops revolutionary technologies (new web-shooters, suits and so on).
  • Present across the media: in the game Spider-Man PS4, Peter works for Dr Octavius in a cutting-edge laboratory, which shows off both his intelligence and his passion for innovation.

These jobs reveal another side of Peter: that of a mature, responsible man trying to build a better world by means other than violence. It is a powerful reminder of his calling: to do good, wherever he can.

Parker Industries: when Peter becomes a respected CEO

  • The birth of Parker Industries: in the more recent comics, Peter founds Parker Industries, a high-tech company that rivals Stark Industries. He wants to build an ethical, innovative business with people at its centre.
  • Revolutionary inventions: the company develops technologies to improve everyday life, but also equipment for super-heroes (smart suits, upgrades to his web-shooters, and so on).
  • A balance that is always fragile: despite his success as a company boss, Peter refuses to behave like Tony Stark. He puts ethics before profitability, which sometimes earns him conflicts with his shareholders… and darker threats besides.
  • A more grown-up Peter: this CEO role marks a form of maturity. He has to manage employees and stand up for his values, all while carrying on protecting New York in the shadow of the suit.
  • A target for his enemies: as an influential boss, he becomes a strategic adversary for villains such as Kingpin, Mysterio or even Norman Osborn, who see Parker Industries as a threat to their interests.

This chapter of his life, however short-lived it often is in the comics, reveals an ambitious, responsible and visionary Peter Parker. He is no longer content simply to survive: he is building a future, for himself and for everyone else.
