The short answer

Three waves shape this market: the fabric-costumed Mego dolls of the 1970s, the Toy Biz range supercharged by the 1994 animated series, then the Hasbro-LEGO era paired with a premium segment aimed at adult collectors. Every cinema release restarts the machine. We break those stages down below.

Since his first appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15 in 1962, Spider-Man has never stopped fascinating children and adults alike. But beyond the comics, the films and the video games, the web-slinger has become a **genuine commercial phenomenon**, especially in the world of toys. Articulated figures, LEGO, vehicles, gadgets, costumes… Spider-Man is one of the most profitable superheroes in the history of merchandising.

In this article, we dive into how Spider-Man toy sales records evolved from the 1970s to today. You’ll discover how certain toys became cult objects, how the films boosted sales, and why the spider universe keeps dominating the shelves of toy shops.

🧸 Whether you’re a vintage fan, a collector of modern figures or simply curious to see the scale of Spider-Man’s impact on the toy industry, this one is for you.

The 1970s-80s: the beginnings of a plastic legend

It was in the 1970s that Spider-Man first made his way into children’s bedrooms… in the shape of an action figure. Mego Corporation was the market leader at the time, and its range of 8-inch figures with fabric costumes was a huge hit. The Spider-Man figure, articulated and dressed just like in the comics, quickly became one of its best sellers.

Back then, superhero merchandising was still in its infancy. But Spider-Man stood out. Thanks to his popularity in the comics and the live-action TV series (1977-1979), he became a fixture of the toy ranges sold in American supermarkets.

The real turning point came when Mattel and above all Kenner entered the market. The first Spider-Man PVC figures, far more affordable and far sturdier, flooded the shelves. By the end of the 1980s, Spider-Man was already a safe bet, on a par with Batman or G.I. Joe.

🕹️ And today? Some of these retro toys are worth a fortune. A Mego Spider-Man figure in its original box can fetch more than $1,000 at auction!

The 1990s-2000s: the golden age of the Spider-Man toy

The 1990s brought a genuine explosion in sales of Spider-Man toys. With the launch of the animated series Spider-Man: The Animated Series in 1994, demand took off in every aisle. The Toy Biz range became a cult favourite: articulated figures, vehicles, playsets, gadgets... everything was designed to recreate the web-slinger’s adventures at home.

Every sidekick and iconic enemy got a figure of their own: Venom, Carnage, Mysterio, the Green Goblin… Children rushed to buy them, and sales soared. In 1995, Spider-Man was the best-selling superhero licence in the toy world, ahead even of Batman, who had dominated until then thanks to his Tim Burton films.

The peak came with Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man film in 2002. The merchandising around it broke every record. The Spider-Man figure with a web-shooting function became the best-selling toy of the year in the United States. Hasbro, which picked up the licence shortly afterwards, built enormous ranges: the alternative suits seen in the films, transforming figures, arm-mounted web-shooters and full costumes for children.

It is worth noting that Raimi’s first film generated more than $100 million in revenue from toys alone in its first 12 months. A performance that Spider-Man 3 would beat again in 2007.

🧩 The 1990s-2000s were therefore the era of massive collections. Plenty of today’s fans started their passion back then, and still carefully keep their Venom figures or the ‘Iron Spider’ Spider-Man armour released at the time.

The MCU era: Tom Holland and the new generation of toys

With the arrival of Tom Holland in the role of Spider-Man in 2016, the merchandising took off all over again. The young actor, more modern and more relatable, let the franchise win over a new generation of fans. And of course, toy sales followed straight away.

The films Homecoming, Far From Home and No Way Home generated tens of millions of euros in merchandise revenue. Hasbro Marvel Legends figures, ultra-detailed MCU costumes, Iron Spider helmet replicas, electronic web-shooters... everything built to match the characters’ big-screen versions.

But the real phenomenon of this period was the rise of premium collector toys. Here we are talking about Hot Toys, S.H. Figuarts and Mafex, who make ultra-detailed figures aimed at adult fans. The result: the market splits between toys for children and collectables for adult geeks.

🧱 Alongside that, LEGO keeps hitting hard. LEGO Spider-Man sets have blown sales figures apart since 2020, with boxes like the Daily Bugle and the Spider-Lair becoming cult items. These toys combine the pull of the LEGO brand with that of the web-slinger, and reach an audience of every age.

Today and tomorrow: immersion, interactivity and the multiverse

Since 2022, the trend has been clear: Spider-Man toys are moving away from the simple static object to become interactive experiences. Connected helmets, talking figures, gesture-recognition accessories… immersive technology is finding its way into children’s sets as much as into products for adult collectors.

At the same time, the success of the Spider-Verse is opening up a new era of multiverse toys. It is no longer one single Spider-Man on sale, but dozens of variants: Spider-Gwen, Miles Morales, Spider-Punk, Spider-Man 2099… Every character has its own toys, costumes and figures. And fans want the full set!

For fans who want even the chore of cooking to become a moment in the universe. A touch of cult humour in the kitchen.

To go from fan-spectator to fan-collector, with no awkward transition.

🎮 The other shift comes from the bridges between physical toys and digital worlds. Some sets unlock content in video games, or launch mini augmented-reality adventures. The toy becomes a gateway into the Spider-Man universe, and demand is soaring.

And the numbers? In 2024, Spider-Man alone accounted for more than €1.3 billion in merchandise sales worldwide, with toys leading the way. A record for a solo superhero, ahead of Batman, Iron Man and even the Avengers combined.
