2. Powers inspired by the animal kingdom… but realistic?
While Spider-Man's origin story remains pure science fiction, his powers are directly inspired by biological features you can actually observe in the animal kingdom. The proportional strength of a spider, for example, is not an invention: some species can lift up to 50 times their own weight. If a human kept that same logic while scaling up, he could lift a car the way Peter Parker does in the comics.
The ability to cling to walls, meanwhile, draws on the adhesion of insect and gecko feet, which climb smooth surfaces thanks to millions of microscopic hairs (the setae) that exploit Van der Waals forces. A team of researchers at Stanford even managed to build a pair of gloves based on those principles, letting a human climb a glass wall. Not quite Spider-Man… but the gap is narrowing.
As for the Spider-Sense, that famous sixth sense which warns Peter of danger, it could be compared to certain forms of animal hyper-perception: sharks, for example, detect the electric fields of their prey; birds sense magnetic fields; and some people develop a sharp intuition built on the micro-signals in their environment. 3. Genetic engineering and modern science: towards a real Spider-Man?
If a spider bite is not enough to create a superhero, modern science is nevertheless opening up prospects that were pure fantasy when Spider-Man was created. Thanks to technologies such as CRISPR-Cas9, it is now possible to edit human DNA in a targeted way. These techniques are used in the lab to correct genetic diseases… but in theory, nothing would stop anyone adding sequences inspired by other species.

Not with a single sting, but through a planned, tightly regulated modification.
