Ben Reilly: running from his past, searching for a future
After his devastating revelation – that he is nothing more than a clone of Peter Parker – Ben Reilly decides to leave it all behind. He takes to the roads of the United States, abandoning New York, Mary Jane, May, and the entire life of the hero he thought he was. That journey marks the beginning of his ‘lost years’, the five years of drifting that give the arc its name.
In this emotional road trip, Ben crosses paths with outsiders, with kind souls and with criminals, but above all he comes up against his own doubts. Can you have an identity when you are a copy? Can you love, act and exist independently of the original?

On his travels, he soon comes face to face with another distorted reflection of himself: Kaine, the very first clone created by the Jackal, unstable both genetically and psychologically. Their reunion is explosive. For Kaine, Ben is to blame for all his misery, an existence that should never have seen the light of day. He hunts him relentlessly, triggering spectacular confrontations.
