The key points before you choose
The name of the final adversary has not been confirmed: three theories are front-runners. The Spot, whose portals undermine the stability of the multiverse; Miguel O'Hara, a guardian of the canon who has grown too rigid; or an all-new threat drawn from the comics. We weigh up each scenario below.

The mystery surrounding the big villain of Beyond the Spider-Verse
Since the release of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, fans have been buzzing. The film left behind a breathless ending, packed with promise and suspense. Everyone is asking the same question: who will be the main antagonist of Beyond the Spider-Verse? While several leads seem to be taking shape, the mystery remains intact. But a few clues make it possible to build solid theories, drawn as much from the comics as from the previous films.
In Across the Spider-Verse, we discovered a villain nobody saw coming (The Spot) for the very first time. Clumsy and almost comical at first, he quickly grows into a multiversal threat able to manipulate interdimensional portals at will. His meteoric rise could well make him the main villain of the next instalment. But is that enough to carry the heart of the conflict? Or are other, even more powerful forces lurking in the shadows?
Some fans lean towards a more dramatic twist: what if Miguel O’Hara, alias Spider-Man 2099, tipped fully into villainy? His obsession with preserving the ‘canon’ and his need to control everything already place him in a morally grey area. That would open the way to a tragic confrontation between Miles Morales and a fallen father figure.

Either way, the scale of the story points to an unprecedented rise in intensity, both emotionally and narratively. And that will no doubt have repercussions across every universe explored so far… including the ones fans have not even seen yet.

Miguel O'Hara
Spider-Man 2099, obsessed with the canon, could tip fully into villainy.
The Spot: an underestimated threat that became central
When he first appears in the Spider-Verse film universe, The Spot seems to be nothing more than a secondary villain, clumsy and comical. But very quickly, his power to manipulate interdimensional portals puts him at the centre of a colossal stake: the very stability of the multiverse. His ability to teleport, to strike from a distance, even to tear rifts between realities, makes him one of the most dangerous enemies encountered so far.

In Across the Spider-Verse, we witness a spectacular transformation. From a humiliated figure he becomes a dark, isolated entity, obsessed with revenge and chaos. This rise echoes the great figures of tragedy: a villain who did not choose evil but fell into it through rejection, mockery and loneliness. His quest to be recognised as Miles Morales’ ‘nemesis’ could culminate in a final showdown as epic as it is symbolic.
In the comics, Jonathan Ohnn – his real name – is a scientist whose experiment goes wrong, leaving him with a body scattered with black portals. Long underused, his forceful return in the Spider-Verse films shows just how much the creators can still surprise us. And this time, he is far more than a simple villain: he is the catalyst for the breaking of the established rules, for the collapse of the ‘canon’.

With power this vast and a motive this personal, The Spot could well be the real engine of the conflict in Beyond the Spider-Verse. But is that enough to eclipse the other threats looming overhead?

A catalyst for rupture
Jonathan Ohnn, a scientist whose body is scattered with black portals, goes from comic villain to a threat to the stability of the multiverse.
Miguel O’Hara: the hero ready to turn antagonist?
In Across the Spider-Verse, one of the most complex and intriguing characters is without doubt Miguel O’Hara, alias Spider-Man 2099. This authoritarian leader of the Spider-Society rigidly defends respect for the ‘canon’, those inevitable events that shape the life of every Spider-Man. But his obsession with the balance of the multiverse pushes him towards extreme methods… to the point of becoming an antagonist himself in Miles Morales’ eyes.
If Beyond the Spider-Verse digs deeper into the conflict between Miguel and Miles, we could witness a fascinating reversal of roles: a hero turned ‘villain’ out of fear of losing control. The scene in which Miguel talks about his own family tragedy and the loss of an entire universe shows that he acts out of trauma… but how far will he go?

This moral dilemma – sacrificing one individual to save the multiverse – could be the heart of the next film. Miguel would not be a villain in the classic sense, but rather a guardian of order who has grown too rigid. A philosophical opposite to Miles, who embodies freedom, the breaking of the rules, the chance to choose your own destiny.

And if Miguel became the film’s main adversary, it would deliver a confrontation never seen before in the Marvel universe: one Spider-Man against another Spider-Man, both convinced they are acting for the common good.

A guardian grown too rigid
Miguel would not be a classic villain: ready to sacrifice one individual to save the multiverse, he stands against Miles' freedom.
Towards a multiversal finale: which threats could close the arc?
Beyond Miguel O’Hara, several other leads remain open for the big antagonist of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. And what if the real threat came not from a single individual, but from a systemic collapse of the multiverse itself? The idea that the established order of the canons could be overturned opens the way to a gradual disintegration of realities… fertile ground for a far more formidable enemy to emerge: absolute chaos.
Among the fan theories, some point to the return of Morlun and the Inheritors, who already appeared in the Spider-Verse comics. These vampiric entities, hunting spider totems across realities, could very well surface in the plot. Their presence would explain the temporal distortions and the urgency of preserving certain ‘key’ Spider-Men.

Another scenario has it that the threat comes from Miles himself. By refusing to submit to an ‘imposed’ canon, Miles Morales could – in spite of himself – trigger an uncontrollable chain reaction. And that is the whole beauty of the narrative arc: the real conflict does not pit good against evil, but free will against determinism.
